What is MiFi?
MiFi is a personal and portable Wi-Fi hotspot that you carry around with you. It allows you to connect any Wi-Fi-enabled device, like your smartphone or laptop to the internet, and it utilises the 3Gnetwork. MiFi is perhaps best thought of as a wireless version of the USB Mobile Broadband dongles.
What are the benefits of MiFi?
The benefit of MiFi over a traditional Mobile Broadband dongle is that the internet connection can be used by more than one device. USB dongles, plugged directly into a laptop, can only be used by that laptop. A Three Mi-Fi portable hotspot can be used by up to five different Wi-Fi-enabled devices at any one time.
Can I secure my MiFi wireless hotspot?
Yes. When you set up your MiFi for the first time, you'll be given the option to create a password - this way only those who you want to share your connection can have access to it.
The Three MiFi dongle has a microSD card slot. What can I do with this?
The Huawei E585 wireless modem that comes with Three MiFi does indeed come with a microSD card slot. This can take cards of up to 32GB in size, and devices connected to the wireless hotspot can view and share any files (like pictures) stored on the SD card.
You can also upload files to the card on the hotspot, making this a good way to share files between friends across a local Wi-Fi network.
How much does 1GB, 3GB, 5GB, 12GB and 15GB a month mean in real terms?
Generally speaking, 1GB gives you around 10 hours of browsing, allows you to watch around 5 4-minute video clips (on YouTube or Vimeo for example) and read 1,000 emails. This is just a rule of thumb approximate guide and not an exact amount.
Data usage will vary depending on things like ad banners, if a web page has any Flash content on it, and if the resolution of a video clip is high definition (HD) or not.
Can I use Three's MiFi abroad?
Yes, depending on where you're going. You can now surf the web on Three's network in over 100 countries.
But before you can do so you'll need to check to see if your account is activated for international roaming. Once you've checked to see if your account is set up for this, you're free to start using MiFi abroad.
Note that all abroad usage will be billed to your account, and will not come out of your MiFi monthly price plan. Internet data is currently charged at £1.28 per Mb. Each Mb of data is the equivalent of viewing about 100 web pages on your phone, or three pages on your laptop.
